Louis Apodaca, FACS-ACE Director

Louis began his career in law enforcement in March 1981 as a Deputy Marshal with the Mesilla Marshal’s Office in Mesilla, New Mexico. In December 1981, he was hired by the Las Cruces Police Department and completed their 13-week academy. Next, Louis was hired by the Tucson Police Department in April 1988 and completed their eight-week lateral academy.

As a Tucson Police Officer, his career included several different positions. After working patrol, becoming a junior investigator and then a burglary investigator, Louis became an instructor of the Gang Resistance Education and Training program (“GREAT”). He instructed at elementary and middle schools, and also was a national “GREAT” instructor, teaching around Arizona and at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glenco, Georgia.

In 1997, Louis was promoted to detective and helped with the implementation of the SORT (Sex Offender Registration and Tracking) unit. During his time in the Adult Sexual Assault Detail, he was involved in investigating and convicting four serial rapists. Soon after, Louis was selected to become one of the detectives in the Internal Affairs Division. Louis finished his career as a Homicide Detective, investigating more than 100 homicides.

During his tenure, Louis was an Arizona State Certified General Instructor, Firearms Instructor (for 18 years), a Defensive Tactics Instructor (for 10 years), a Hostage Negotiator (for 8 years), and a SWAT Operator (for 7 years). He also helped create and instruct a 40-hour Sexual Assault Course, an Advanced Sexual Assault Detective Course and a video on how to collect and preserve biological evidence. He has received many distinguished medals including the Medal of Merit and the Medal of Valor.

Born and raised in Las Cruces, New Mexico, Louis has been married to his high school sweetheart for 28 years. He has two children and three grandsons. While retired, but never tired, he enjoys traveling, riding his Harley Davidson and spending time with his grandsons.
